Upper Level’s Inaugural Caedmon Water Walk and Kiva Fundraiser

This fall, Upper Level students will participate in the inaugural Caedmon Water Walk.  This special project is designed to raise awareness about global water issues as well asraise money for the organization Kiva to help alleviate some of these issues and increase worldwide access to potable drinking water.  On October 20th, each Upper Level student will walk approximately one mile around the neighborhood carrying about one gallon of water. Our students will experience what millions of children around the world do every single day; walking often far distances to obtain drinking water for their families.  The walk will also raise community awareness about these issues.

Kiva connects people through lending to alleviate poverty.   The average loan provided through Kiva is about $400.  Because of the very small nature of their businesses the eligible entrepreneurs would not otherwise have access to these types of banking services.  Although the entrepreneurs may or may not be involved directly with water related projects, all projects will help alleviate poverty in their respective communities, thus increasing community access to potable drinking water.  Once the money is in our Kiva account, students will be able to choose the entrepreneurs they would like to lend money to.

Upon repayment, the money is returned to the school’s Kiva account allowing the students to make more loans to other entrepreneurs.  The money raised this year will continue to be loaned and re-loaned by Upper Level classes for many years to come.  The loans are usually repaid within six months and throughout that time the students will receive updates from the field about the status of their loan.  In this way Kiva connects lenders and recipients allowing for respectful cross- cultural communication.
