Giving to Caedmon

Caedmon is a community that gives and then gives again, be it the faculty and staff who give of their hearts and minds over and above the call of duty; the parents who pay their considerable tuitions only to further enrich their children’s experience by giving again of their time and resources; or the children themselves who give unendingly of their curiosity, optimism, and pure hunger for life to feed our spirits and ultimately justify our existence. It is for the children that we teach, and it is for the children that we give.

The accompanying pages on this website, describing community service, spring plays, alum volunteerism, and PA activities, all speak to the intangible gifts that are the constant and sustaining life’s blood of our school. On these Development pages, we define some of the more tangible aspects of giving: the long and short-range fiscal needs of Caedmon and the various structures that exist to facilitate their support. Tangible and intangible giving are the “yin and yang” of non-profit, educational institutions, and Caedmon is no exception. That Caedmon can claim such a healthy balance of the two is reason to be proud.

And why do we give so continually and so completely? It is for the children, certainly, but as much for the world they will inherit. For what good are healthy, capable, and empathetic children, if the world they will inhabit is incapable of sustaining them or their dreams. In feeding our children we are feeding society and we must always look beyond their innocent faces to visualize the community, nation, and planet that will be theirs when we are gone. It serves to remember that all our generosity and effort within the microcosm that is The Caedmon School is in essence a contribution to the world we share. Indeed, it is through our children, as well as for them, that we work to build a better world.

And the awareness of this must be part of the education we provide.
