Early Program Typical Day
A typical day in the Early Program…

The day begins with a “Morning Meeting,” during which the children sit in a circle to share news, read stories, plan special projects, or observe a teacher presenting new materials.

The children are then called individually to move into their independent work time, during which they are guided to appropriate instructional materials on the shelves. Once an exercise has been mastered, more advanced ones are presented, allowing each child to work at his or her own individual pace. This is an important time of day, since it gives the teachers an opportunity to observe, assist if needed, or introduce new materials to selected children.

Each morning, the children have forty minutes of outdoor free play in the courtyard. As part of their weekly schedule, they leave the classroom to work with specialists in music and movement.

The half-day three-year-olds are dismissed at 11:30 am. At this time, the full day four-year-olds begin their lunch, followed by a rest period at 12:30 pm.

During the afternoon, with fewer children in the class, there is opportunity to do more extensive instructional work in the areas of language arts, math, geography.

Dismissal for the four-year-olds is at 3:30 pm.
