Caedmon Family Perspectives

Selecting a school for your child is an exciting process.  Caedmon families are eager to share thoughts about their experience at our school with prospective families. Upon request, we are happy to connect prospective families with current families. Please contact the Admissions office if you would like to take advantage of this opportunity.

Current Caedmon parents have answered these three questions:

Why did you choose to send your child to The Caedmon School?

Now that your family is part of the community, what are the reasons that you are happy with the school?

How did Caedmon support your family during the Middle School admissions process?

We hope that you find this information to be helpful when learning about our community.

Why did you choose to send your child to The Caedmon School?

When our family visited The Caedmon School for the first time, I was surprised by the children's vivid smiles and politeness at the entrance hall.  We also were impressed by the heart warming, friendly environment with a high academic standard.  After we visited, we knew we would like to send our daughter to this school.

Kenichi, Current Parent

We chose Caedmon because it embodied all we were looking for in a school for our children.  Specifically, we were impressed by the academic rigor, as well as the focus on diversity- both cultural and economic.  It was clear from the start that diversity wasn't something that was just talked about in a brochure, but diversity was woven into every part of the curriculum.  Raising children in New York City for us meant that we needed to find a school that "looked" like New York City.

Amy, Caedmon Parent

We were first interested in Caedmon because of its Montessori curriculum.  And, we found that and so much more: a wonderful hands-on learning experience, a strong art and music program, a very diverse student body, and a place where children thrived due to the warm, nurturing and academically and artistically stimulating environment.  As a result, for seven years, we drove from Chelsea everyday to bring our children to school on the Upper East Side.  We were so happy.

Elizabeth, Caedmon Parent

We chose The Caedmon School because it offers our family all the benefits of a tight-knit, small town community school in the middle of one of the most frenetic cities in the world. Caedmon is the kind of school where every child is known by name, and the faculty and staff take the time to know each child as an individual. Caedmon offers a safe and nurturing environment with a deep sense of commitment to education and development. We are very happy to have found The Caedmon School.

During the Open House I sat and listened to all of the testimonies concerning The Caedmon School and in my heart I knew that it was the right place for my daughters. This was not just a school, but a second home. Two days after my oldest daughter started the Early Program she came home and said, "Mommy I love my Caedmon School!" I knew right then that I had made the right decision. Caedmon is a special place and has caused both of my girls to love school and for that I will forever be grateful.

Tiesha, Parent of Two Caedmon Alums

We appreciated the wide range of personalities and backgrounds of the faculty and students.  Moreover, we were impressed by the culture of allowing children to develop naturally versus a one-size fits all cookie-cutter approach.  Learning is emphasized as a process versus as a means to an end.  As a Caedmon parent today, we highly value the commitment and warmth of the faculty and find the overall school atmosphere very nurturing.

Elana, Caedmon Parent

Our older daughter went to the elementary program at Caedmon and we're intimately familiar with The Caedmon School. The school was a fabulous place for Maya, and we believe it would be for Amba as well. We appreciate Caedmon's philosophy of nurturing the individuality of each child, and at the same time developing a strong sense of social consciousness. We also recognize that Caedmon prepares the child for academic and personal growth. We're especially struck by how each graduating Upper Level student had developed his or her own set of personal strengths and had overcome challenges. In addition, Caedmon prepares each child very well for academic challenges in middle school.

Liz, Caedmon Parent

During my first visit to Caedmon I took notice of how "right it felt".  As I toured the school it was evident that the students as well as the faculty wanted to be here. Further, I observed the mutual respect between students and teachers.  I knew then I wanted my child to attend Caedmon.

Lizzette, Caedmon Parent

Caedmon welcomed us from the first moment with warmth and genuine interest in our son.  He (and we) were having such a wonderful experience that we decided to send our next child to Caedmon as well.  They are very different children, different genders with different interests and strengths, and Caedmon has been fantastic for both of them.

Mary Beth, Caedmon Parent

There were many reasons we chose to send our son to The Caedmon School.  Environment: the warmth and love that was felt when we visited Caedmon during our search for a school. We were also in favor of an on-going school that did not have a middle school and older students.  Opportunity: Caedmon provides a multitude of specialists, academic and cultural; that we wanted our child to experience as much opportunity as possible.  When your child is two years old you really don’t know where their interests and growth will lead them. The fact that Caedmon is an on-going school with varied educational opportunities, taught by caring and loving teachers, is the reason our son maintains his interest for learning.  Community: Caedmon is supportive of the family and our family is supportive of Caedmon. This school felt like a great extension of our family.

Christine, Caedmon Parent

Caedmon embodies the nurturing and stimulating atmosphere in which a passion for knowledge and learning can be ignited in a child. This, coupled with the internationally diverse community and high quality teachers, was the key driver for our decision to send our child to Caedmon.

Cecilia & Ignacio, Caedmon Parents

On the school tour, we met two fabulous 5th grade students who showed us around. They were polite, poised and well-spoken, but yet they were still clearly children, not young teen-agers. This is how we wanted our own child to be at the end of elementary school. We understood then that sending our children to a true elementary schools was really important, because it would allow them to grow without the daily pressure to keep up with the middle-schoolers.

Sarah, Caedmon Parent

We chose Caedmon because we were looking for a school that seemed intimate and focused on the individual needs of the child. We believed our oldest daughter, who would be entering the Beginners program at the time, was very sensitive and would require a gentle and caring approach. That is exactly what she was provided. We also wanted a school that had a somewhat flexible teaching style while still providing structure while promoting the individual talents of the child.

Alicia, Caedmon Parent

I grew up in an all-white county in Tennessee. I chose Caedmon for its incredible ethnic, economic and religious diversity.

Now that your family is part of the community, what are the reasons that you are happy with the school?

As our daughter finished 2nd grade, she mentioned to me that she was very sad.  She said to me, "Daddy, I will miss 2nd grade, it was a very good year for me."  After a busy summer, she returned to Caedmon in the fall to begin 3rd grade with a new teacher.  When I asked her how her first day of 3rd grade went, she enthusiastically responded "Daddy, it was great!  I had a great day!" and proceeded to use "great" a few more times.  She concluded, "I really love school!"  The Caedmon School has provided an excellent environment that has shaped our daughter's character today.  She has become a confident, independent thinking, out-going young individual who loves to learn.

John, Current Parent

As a parent, I am impressed by the positive and friendly attitude of every teacher toward the students and the parents.  Teachers find the good points of every student and try to enforce them. My daughter gained confidence year after year at the school. At the same time, I am impressed with how well the teachers care for and understand every child.  This is possible in a relatively small community.

Kenichi, Current Parent

From the very beginning, we felt welcomed into the Caedmon community.  As a new parent, it was extremely easy to get involved and feel like a part of something bigger that was happening in our son's life.  Caedmon has proven to be the perfect blend of professional teachers with that "warm and fuzzy" factor.  Living in New York City can often be overwhelming, but we've found that Caedmon has allowed us to be part of a smaller, more intimate cross section of this diverse city, one we are happy to call "home" because of Caedmon.

Amy, Caedmon Parent

I have one child who just graduated from Caedmon, one entering the 2nd grade and a third child entering Beginners.  I have felt from the beginning that Caedmon strives to meet the individual needs of each child, whether it's giving them extra support, adding a greater challenge or being open to new ways to enable each one to do their best.  No matter what is going on in the school or the classroom, in my experience, the child has always come first at Caedmon.  It is most obvious once your child has graduated...happy, secure, eager to learn, with a strong academic foundation and a strong sense of self.  It is magical.

Elizabeth, Caedmon Parent

Our children, age 4 and age 8, are happy to go to school everyday, and more importantly, they are excited to share with us what they have learned when they get home. Our children are really enjoying the process of learning which is really gratifying to us as parents. Both of our children have developed strong attachments to their teachers, and we can see why when we witness the dedication and effort put forward by the teachers at Caedmon. With everyone at Caedmon so focused on the mission of education, it's easy to see why our children get excited to learn.

Nancy & Omar, Current Parents

There are so many reasons why we're happy at Caedmon.  First and most important is that our 8-year old son is excited to go to school each and every day.  The teachers at Caedmon have a unique way of making the learning process fun for him, and he is challenged by and interested in the broad-based curriculum.  From our perspective as parents, we also love the fact that the families, faculty and administrators at Caedmon are a diverse group of people with a common goal -- always working to ensure that the children are happy, engaged and cared for.

Roberta, Caedmon Parent

We are happy with Caedmon because our children absolutely love going to school!  The teachers and the administrative staff, even the nurses, create an environment that is loving, warm, and fun for our children.  Our children view Caedmon as a home away from home.

Susan, Caedmon Parent

We are extremely happy. Amba enjoys the program very much and is excited about learning. She has already developed that sense of responsibility and graciousness that Caedmon encourages. She also greatly appreciates the respect with which her teachers and classmates treat each other.

Liz, Caedmon Parent

Besides having a happy well adjusted kid who misses Caedmon whenever school isn't in session, I like the attention dedicated to each and every child.  Caedmon is on top of my child's academic development.  They know where he is, where he should be and what to do to ensure a successful transition into 6th grade.

Lizzette, Caedmon Parent

The teachers, the administration and the other families.  Everyone has been great; lots of individualized attention to students' needs and development.  The community is also a big plus.  It's diverse racially and economically and takes its commitment to diversity very seriously and sincerely.

Mary Beth, Caedmon Parent

Seven years later, my son is still happy and enjoys going to school.  Caedmon cares about the individual child and the family. Besides the administrators, every staff member is warm and loving, and they are committed to assist us all as needed.  Caedmon provides various educational opportunities and specialists, which gives our child the most experiences possible.

Christine, Caedmon Parent

We are extremely satisfied with the manner each child is embraced and nurtured. Each child has different strengths and areas for development. we feel that the teachers (past and present) recognize and reinforce this with each student. We feel that our daughter’s teachers support her, guide her and promote her self-confidence. We see this outside the classroom as she interacts with her friends, family and neighbors. Also, we are surprised to find many new friends at Caedmon. Not only is our daughter receiving great attention and guidance, we have developed great relationships/friendships with other parents of Caedmon students. Since our focus was our daughter and the school, we did not anticipate this at all.

John, Caedmon Parent

We wanted our children to have an elementary school experience. Our choice was substantiated this year when were invited to the 5th grade graduation ceremony. We were impressed by the poise, self-confidence, and accomplishments of the graduating children. It was evident that they were complete with their elementary experience and were excited to begin their chosen on-going schools.

Charlotte, Caedmon Parent

Reasons that I am happy with Caedmon are the individual attention each child receives and the way that each child is made to feel that they matter. The small size of the classes and the school mean that children have opportunities to participate, to contribute, and to be noticed that they would never have had in a larger school. This kind of environment made my children happy to be who they are.

How did Caedmon support your family during the Middle School admissions process?

Caedmon was extremely supportive throughout the Middle School admissions process.  The administration and teachers managed to help make the entire process a pleasure, so that we didn't feel any unnecessary pressure.  Our son was accepted into all of his top choices.  And, I believe that an important factor was that Caedmon is well-liked and regarded by the ongoing schools.  The children from Caedmon are well-prepared when they go on their interviews and when they take the ISEE.  I was impressed.

Elizabeth, Caedmon Parent

Caedmon’s Head of School and staff were extremely helpful and supportive throughout the entire Middle School admissions process.  They answered all of our questions and were very knowledgeable about all of the private schools in the city.  Most importantly, because they understood our daughter so well, they knew exactly what kind of learning environment would best suit her.  With their expert guidance, we were able to choose a school that matched her perfectly.  Today, she attends a highly regarded girls school where she thrives both academically and socially.  She couldn’t be happier with how everything worked out – and neither could we.

Jathena, Caedmon Parent

The children are well prepped throughout their entire education at Caedmon. Courteous behavior, eye contact and treating the children as important members of a community prepare them for the interviews very well. In addition, the teachers and our Admissions Director, Mrs. Papir worked with them to improve their interview and application skills.  Applying to middle school was made much saner with the advice and encouragement from the Head of School, Dr. Blackburn. He knew our child's strengths and areas she may need support. When we told him our first choice, he worked closely with us and the middle school to make sure it was a good fit. He was very honest and supportive and completely on the mark. Maya is now in the academic scholar's program at her school - much of her academic success comes from a strong sense of responsibility and conscientiousness, good academic preparation and an ability to apply critical thinking to her classes - much of which has to do with Caedmon's academic program and wonderful teachers.

Liz, Caedmon Parent

We had a very positive experience applying and gaining admission to continuing schools for both of our daughters. The teachers and staff were extremely helpful in finding the right schools for each of them, and were supportive and available for every step of the process. The children are worked with closely to prepare them for tests and interviews, and to keep the experience as stress-free as possible. Our older daughter transitioned seamlessly into middle school after her time at Caedmon. Coming from such a warm and nurturing environment allowed her to move into the next phase of her education with great ease and confidence. She is excelling academically, and very happy socially. We are looking forward to a similar experience with her younger sister next year.

Sue, Caedmon Parent

We are delighted with the results of our daughter’s Middle School placement process and have Caedmon to thank for our success. The Caedmon staff deserves the highest accolades for making the ongoing school placement process a pleasure. Dr. Blackburn is personally involved working closely with Upper Level students and their families. He and his team provide every family with individualized advice and guidance to find the right ongoing school for each child. The Upper Level teachers did a remarkable job preparing the students for each step of the process including: preparing applications, taking the ISEE and going on interviews. Our daughter went on her interviews feeling confident and excited about “choosing” her next school.

The admissions staff we met at the various schools repeatedly told us how impressed they are with Caedmon students. Caedmon students are uniquely prepared both academically and socially to easily transition into Middle School. Madison and her classmates were actively sought after by all of the city’s top private and public school programs. It was truly amazing to go through this process with our daughter and to see the results of how she has grown and matured during her years at Caedmon.
