Holiday Play Report

In the wake of having received an award for its multi-cultural holiday play curriculum; Caedmon once again celebrated the season with song, dance, fervor, and fun. This year, music teacher Mr. Davidson reached into the repertory files of the Caedmon Players and re-created Holidays with the Clauses (On The Road To Bethlehem), which was originally staged in 1995. Though the title suggests plenty of Christmas imagery, this particular show is actually one of the most cultural-inclusive productions ever created at Caedmon. The variety show hosted by Santa and Mrs. Claus from the North Pole – full of songs celebrating Chanukah, Ramadan, Diwali, Kwanzaa, and Christmas – is “interrupted” by news bulletins from the Middle East, where “Caesar Augustus has declared a census and all must travel to their places of birth to pay taxes.” The successive bulletins follow Mary and Joseph ben David as they wend their weary way toward Bethlehem, along the way celebrating Chanukah and encountering wise men of faith from all over the world.

The all-school affair, staged by Mr. Davidson and pulled together with the help of all the elementary teachers, was a real tribute to the spiritual and cultural diversity that has become a hallmark of Caedmon’s mission. Even the Early Program joined in the celebration when they came onstage as the “heavenly host” to lead the annual All-school Sing.
