Vision from the Blue Plane-Window

by Ernesto Cardenal

translated by Jonathan Cohen

(Compliments of Dr. Blackburn)

In the round little window, everything is blue,
land bluish, blue-green, blue
(and sky)
everything is blue
blue lakes and lagoons
blue volcanoes
while farther off the land looks bluer
blue islands in a blue lake.
This is the face of the land liberated.
And where all the people fought, I think:
for love!
To live without the hatred
of exploitation.
To love one another in a beautiful land
so beautiful, not only in itself
but because of the people in it,
above all because of the people in it.
That's why God gave us this beautiful land
for the society in it.
And in all those blue places they fought, suffered
for a society of love
here in this land.

One patch of blue looks more intense...
And I thought I was seeing the sites of all the battles there,
and of all the deaths,
behind that small, round windowpane
blue
all the shades of blue.

The cooking we did was connected to our math unit where the children worked on following directions, measuring, and money. (They pay with play money.) We cooked quesadillas, turkey tacos, salsa, guacamole, smoothies, and a banana dessert. Each of the children was chopping and preparing. They worked hard, and it was delicious.

Return your Contact Forms

for Next Year!

There are still a number of contact info forms that have not been returned to school. These are an important part of our upcoming summer mailing. If you haven’t filled yours in yet, please do so asap. If you have misplaced it, please feel free to call Sue Bonet during the school day next week, and she will update your info over the phone. Thank you..

.

Kenya Coins!

We will be toting the four barrels of Kenya Coins to the bank soon, to see how much the children have collected this year. If your child hasn’t brought in their jars, they should do so this week ...or else just keep collecting through the summer.

We encourage everyone to keep collecting all summer, since the project will continue into next year.  If your jar is in the lobby, come and collect it this week.  Thank you...

FROM THE CAEDMON FAMILY ASSOCIATION

Another year has come and gone.  We have had many successful fundraising events over the year, especially our Spring Fundraiser.  As a result of all your hard work and generosity, The CFA is able to contribute to our school...

$145.000

As the exiting Co-Presidents, we would like to thank each and every one of you for allowing us to lead our community of special family members, whose main goal is to serve our school and our children.  We are leaving you in the capable and eager hands of our new Co-Presidents, Amy Chatterjee and Joanne Gambone.  Along with Stephanie Lofgren and Martha Hanson, they have already begun preparing for the next school year.  Their first event will be the Separation Coffees, for which they have prepared a special message found at the bottom of the page.

We have many chairs in place for next year’s CFA events, all of whom are listed below.  If you wish to participate in any of these events, please feel free to contact the event chair, or any of the CFA officers.

Annual Fund Update

There are so many ways in which Caedmon families contribute to the school each year that keeping track of one’s contributions is understandably confusing.  “If I give to the Reverse Auction, does it count for Annual Giving?”   “If I volunteered a lot of time to school events, will a gift of $25 to Annual Giving make a difference?”

Ultimately, all gifts of time, money, or creativity end up serving the same purpose – the children.  However, Annual Giving IS a separate yearly initiative, in which we ask everyone to participate over and above everything else they do.  Even if you have expressed the bulk of your support in other ways, a token gift of $25 or $100 to the Annual Fund makes a huge difference. Unanimous participation in Annual Giving sends a clear message of commitment form our whole community.

Thanks to recent pledges and gifts, the participation level has jumped to

86%!!! Please consider a gift to Annual Giving before June 30th – even if it is a small one – so that we may reach our participation goal.

Thankfulness in the Early Program

by Ms. Simmons

"I would maintain that thanks are the highest form of thought, and that gratitude is happiness doubled by wonder." ~ G.K. Chesterton

Inspired by an article about a woman who made a "Grateful Box" with her son, I decided to make a "Thankful Box" with our class.  We found an old, heavy-duty box with a lid, and the children decorated it using pieces of tissue paper and Mod Podge.  It was placed on a shelf next to a basket filled with pieces of pale blue and purple paper.  Whenever the children like, they can write a word or words, or draw a picture of something or someone they are thankful for, and put it in the box.  They can sign their name if they wish.  Some of the children occasionally tell me a story about what they are thankful for, and ask me to write their story on the back of their drawing.  We've had the box out for over two months now, and it has been an amazing experience.  There are particular children who use it almost every day.  The most beautiful thing has been that all of the words and drawings that have been placed in the box have represented people, or things in nature.  Not one has been of a material object ...except for a drawing of a chocolate chip cookie!

Below is a very small sampling of the many thoughts that have been expressed in words or drawings and placed in our Thankful Box.

I am thankful for my family. - Piper

I am thankful for springtime. - Caroline

I am thankful for my Mommy and for Chris. - Joely

I am thankful for my Daddy and my Mom. - Leo

I am thankful for the sun, the beach, and the ocean. - Benjamin

UL Greek Sculpture

On Wednesday, the Upper Level dedicated their sculptures of Greek gods in a be-toga-ed ceremony in the art room, followed by a feast of contemporary Greek food and music.

The results are in…

The Caedmon Community collected:

150 pajamas and 110 books!

This brings the total collected from Caedmon for this school year to nearly 400 pajamas and 327 books. For anyone keeping count, the totals from inception of the program at Caedmon in April 2008, are exactly 659 pajamas and 602 books.

A big THANK YOU to The Caedmon Community!

The pajamas and books are greatly appreciated by all the children helped by the Pajama Program.

Calling All Volunteers!!!

As the summer quickly approaches, planning is already underway for a new group of families to join the Caedmon community in the fall. Volunteers are needed to host the separation coffees during the first week of school.  We are seeking two hosts each day and you only need to commit for one day.   You, along with one other volunteer, will be responsible for providing the food (a light breakfast) and getting others involved to bake, buy, or donate the breakfast.

If you are interested, please contact our new CFA Co-Presidents.
