Beginners Chess (Early Program only)

Using fun, interactive, and creative storytelling, our Early Program friends will learn the background stories behind each of the chess pieces. For example, why does the king only move one square at a time and why is the rook always “running”? Children will need to take the class to find out the answer. Children practice their executive functioning, fine-motor and gross-motor skills, as they mix, stir, dice, and blend a host of foods to produce delicious meals. For those with a little more experience in the kitchen, this cooking class provides students the practice needed to become their own sous chefs. Students do all the mixing, chopping, rolling, and seasoning as they prepare a variety of delicious meals, snacks, and beverages. In addition to taking home their creations, children get to sample their food in class while developing design skills and etiquette. Some of the menu highlights include potato latkes, baked lasagna, and Irish
soda bread.
Trains, Planes, and Automobiles: Transportation City! (Early Program – 2 nd Grade)

This class not only celebrates the amazing feats of railroad construction and vehicle engineering but also ventures into the ocean and the air! We will explore topics related to automobiles, boats, airplanes, submarines, speed trains, and any other forms of transportation that children show an interest in. Film Making (3rd Grade – 5th Grade)

They will learn about different types of shots, how to make a scene spatially clear, and how to maintain the flow of an action from one shot to the next. Does your child love science as much as they love sketching? In this exploratory art class, students will unite STEM and creativity through hands-on projects inspired by the natural world. Activities may include painting with pendulums, making leaf rubbings, creating cyanotype prints from the sun, and other exciting experiments that blend art and science. Along the way, students will gain a deeper appreciation for nature, build environmental awareness, and discover new ways to express their creativity. Inspired by the live-action/animated television series Wild Kratts, this zoology class takes an in-depth look at a variety of wild animals and their unique characteristics. Specifically for this session, all the animals we research will be endangered or near extinction. We will investigate reasons why certain animals are in danger and the pivotal roles they play in the
ecosystems. We will brainstorm tactics that can be used to protect these animals. This class includes hands-on, interactive projects that will be completed each class to fortify student learning. This is the class for every child who wants to deeply examine the animal world.

This beginner to intermediate level class will develop all the key tennis fundamentals, including stance, swing, and footwork. Children will learn how to hit forehands, backhands, and volleys among friends in a familiar space. Martial Arts I (Kindergarten - 2nd Grade)

This class is taught by Pete Bregman (husband of Ms. Woodruff), a professional Cartoonist, Illustrator. Digital Content Creator, Toy Designer, and Graphic Novelist. By drawing from various works of art, photographs, nature, and still life that surrounds them, students will dedicate themselves to this focused activity that promotes visual thinking skills. The classic game of table tennis is a can’t miss after school class. Children will learn to hit forehands and backhands with the wood paddle while placing the small plastic ball over the net and onto the table.
