On Friday, May 23rd, Fifth graders received a visit from Caedmon Class of 2007’s Karina Caban, who happens to be a cousin of current Fifth grader Celeste. Karina had a musical purpose behind her visit–she is a longtime guitarist and wanted to perform on the electric guitar for her cousin’s class.
Karina started off by asking all the students in the class to share about instruments they play and what music or musicians they like. She talked a little as well about her life after Caedmon, which has involved teaching abroad, in Spain, for two years during the pandemic, and she fielded multiple questions, including one about how different Caedmon’s spaces are today from what they looked like when she was an elementary student, in this century’s first decade. Karina then segued into a warm-up in which she performed portions of Jimi Hendrix’s “Voodoo Child” and “Just the Two of Us,” along with bits of several other songs. Satisfied that she was ready and her guitar in tune, finally Karina regaled the Fifth grade with an extended solo performed over a backing track.
