Classes are specially curated to meet the needs and desires of Caedmon families.

After School Class Offerings

Most of our classes are intended for a mixed grade audience, allowing children to interact with peers from other homerooms. Each day includes diverse offerings, appealing to those interested in visual arts, design technology, sports, culinary arts, music, and more.

Winter Term 2023-2024

PeeWee Tennis (Mondays)

Early Program children learn stance, swing, and a variety of volleys in this introductory tennis class. Improvement in hand-eye coordination, focus, gross and fine-motor skills, along with fun, social interaction, is a guarantee.

Fun with French (Mondays)

Early Program students learn French through an immersive curriculum produced by Carousel of Languages. Songs, fun games, and art inspire students to fully engage with the language via a multisensory approach.

Carousel French (Mondays)

Available for Kindergarten and First graders, this French class is like no other. The premier Carousel of Languages program combines art, music, and fun hands on activities in an immersive setting to inspire students to not only learn but love their new language.

Filmmaking (Mondays)

Third, Fourth, and Fifth graders will learn the secrets to movie making as they write, act in, film, and edit their own short scenes. The students will collaborate to create a short film from one of their own stories as a culminating project. Fun times in front of and behind the camera, so who’s ready to make a movie?

Pickleball (Mondays)

Second through Fifth graders take to the Caedmon gym to partake in the country’s fastest-growing sport. Students will learn the rules of the game and strategies of play while improving agility, hand-eye coordination, accuracy, and stamina. Make new friends, stay active, and build valuable life skills.

Minecraft II (Mondays)

Experienced Third, Fourth and Fifth graders ply their digital design and survival skills in this 60-minute onscreen adventure. Critical thinking and problem solving are at a premium in this fascinating Minecraft Edu world.

Caedmon Chefs Ray (Mondays)

Beginners and Early Program children become kitchen stars in this introductory cooking class. Children learn to mix, dice, stir, and season a host of ingredients to make fantastic treats, including flatbread pizza and gingerbread cookies. All goodies and a detailed recipe sheet come home with each chef after every class.

Caedmon Chefs Flay (Mondays)

This more advanced cooking class provides Kindergarten, First, and Second graders the tools needed to become sous chefs. Students do all the mixing, chopping, rolling, and seasoning to create a multitude of treats, including flatbread pizza and gingerbread cookies. All goodies and a detailed recipe sheet come home with each chef after every class.

Sculpture Design (Mondays)

Using a variety of techniques, Kindergarten, First, and Second graders adopt a multi-step process to turn common household items into intricately designed 3D structures. It’s a fun and challenging class that is perfect for creative students with an interest in crafts and construction.

Junior SocRoc (Tuesdays)

Early Program and Kindergarten children flourish in this high-energy soccer class. Fundamentals, including dribbling, one-touch, and two-touch passes, trapping, and shooting, along with fun games and fitness exercises, are included in each class. It’s a nonstop workout for youngsters.

Dalcroze Eurythmics Music (Tuesdays)

For Beginners and Early Program children, this “music training through movement” class incorporates rhythmic physical action as a prelude to the tempo, meter, and sound that defines music. Fun games, stories, and improvisation are hallmarks to each class.

Martial Arts (Tuesdays)

Kindergarten, First and Second grade students improve focus, stance, and balance while developing patience, self-control, core strength, and stamina. It’s a fun class with enormous cognitive, social-emotional, and physical benefits. Martial Arts uniform is included.

Pottery (Tuesdays)

A variety of functional and sculptural pieces are the end products in this wondrous crafts class for Second through Fifth grade students. It takes patience, focus, and imagination as students use basic hand building techniques to bring their ideas from concept to artwork.

Senior SocRoc (Tuesdays)

Kindergarten through Third graders learn the art of one-touch and two-touch passes in this fun but vigorous soccer workout. Goals and assists are aplenty as these young players begin to master an array of ball and trapping skills, key fundamentals to soccer success.

Theatre for Kids (Tuesdays)

First, Second, and Third graders explore their creative side with movement exercises, character development, and fun interactions with each other. Weekly lessons culminate in their own mini-shows at the end of the term.

Circuit Design (Tuesdays)

From a radio to a siren to portable fans, Early Program and Kindergarten students will explore the hardware that power these devices. This is a hands-on class where the students own curiosities and brainpower teach them circuit design and electricity.

Lego Gear Bots (Tuesdays)

Third, Fourth, and Fifth grade builders need to line up for this dynamic engineering class. Using LEGO Technic bricks and papercraft, they will construct physics-driven kinetic creatures each class and will be able to explain engineering basics as they show off their newly-built machines.

Marine Biology (Tuesdays)

Second, Third, and Fourth grade students probe the deep sea to learn more about aquatic creatures and their habitats in this hands-on science exploration class. Students use their powers of observation and analysis to fully understand and appreciate the beauty and mystery of these amazing ecosystems.

Little Architects (Wednesdays)

The natural creativity and imagination for Beginners and Early Program children serves as the foundation in a class where students construct a bridge that spans a winding river or build a house out of straws that withstands the big bad wolf’s breath. These hands-on projects provide the ultimate in fun, engagement, and understanding building design and construction.

Tumbleweeds (Wednesdays)

Basic body awareness is enhanced for Early Program students who take to the mat to learn forward and backward rolls, handstands, and more under the safe guidance of a gymnastics coach. Children will love this fun, creative, and physical form of expression.

Minecraft I (Wednesdays)

For First and Second graders still learning the various onscreen tools, this visual design class introduces the concept of sustainability and the proper allocation of resources. Children have fun as they think critically and creatively in the fascinating world of Minecraft Edu.

Prehistoric Adventures (Wednesdays)

Early Program, Kindergarten, and First graders go way back in time to learn about the very first known species to take flight, the pterosaurs, and all the other animals that inhabited the earth more than 100 million years ago. A variety of interactive, hands-on activities bring back to life these long extinct animals.

Caedmon Hoops II (Wednesdays)

The foundations of solid basketball play for Second through Fifth graders are at the heart of this skills-based class. Students will develop their passing, dribbling, and shooting technique through a variety of fun exercises and activities. Full court games conclude each class.

Art on Canvas (Wednesdays)

Kindergarten through Third grade students will become masters of the canvas in this ultimate painting class. The artists will incorporate various painting styles as they create images representing numerous styles and movements, including Classical, Abstract, and Impressionistic.

Comic Workshop II (Wednesdays)

Third, Fourth and Fifth grade illustrators grow their drawing skills while expanding their imaginations thanks to this new comics-art interdisciplinary curriculum. There’s no limit to the fun exploration of cartooning and the creative messaging communicating by the unique medium of cartoons.

Dungeons & Dragons (Wednesdays)

The famous and beloved D & D continues this winter. Fourth and Fifth graders employ creative problem solving and cooperative work as they advance long-term plots and goals in this imaginative adventure world.

Beginners Chess II (Thursdays)

Early Program students learn the background stories behind each of the chess pieces as a precursor to game play. In addition, children develop math skills, critical thinking, focus, patience, and executive functioning skills. New and returning students are welcome.

World Music Fair (Thursdays)

Beginners and Early Program students jam along with FunikiJam’s globe-trotting agents of rock in this immersive musical journey. This celebration of world music, which crosses through Mexico, Egypt, Japan, and several other nations, is a super fun way for children to develop auditory sense, rhythm, and language development.

Carousel French (Thursdays)

Outer Space Explorers (Thursdays)

In voyaging to black holes, The Milky Way, and galaxies far away, these Early Program, Kindergarten, and First Grade aspiring astronauts utilize a hands-on approach to learn fascinating details about life above the atmosphere. Planets, stars, asteroids, and a myriad of other space objects are just some of the subjects covered this winter.

Chessplayers (Thursdays)

Kindergarten and First graders review core fundamentals as they expand upon their basic knowledge of the game before moving onto independent play. The Chess Advance style incorporates puzzles and questions which inspire children to think more critically about pieces, positions, and strategy.

Caedmon Hoops I (Thursdays)

This skills-based basketball class for Kindergarten and First graders teaches the fundamentals of dribbling, passing, and proper shooting form and utilizes a variety of challenging games and vigorous exercises as reinforcement. There will be lots of sweat and fun in each class with full court games to wrap up the action.

Board Games (Thursdays)

Traditional Fourth and Fifth grade gamers revel in the competition courtesy of character-building games like Clank, The Settlers of Catan, and Pandemic. Focus, executive functioning, cooperation, sportsmanship, and grace are benefits in addition to the fun.

Caedmon Dance Club (Thursdays)

It’s high-energy groovin’ as First through Fourth graders are introduced to Jazz and Hip Hop fundamentals. Students will have a lot of fun as they learn sequential movements while finding a welcoming space for individual creative expression. They’ll also improve coordination, core strength, stamina, and flexibility.

Swimming (Thursdays)

The water at Goldfish Swim School (80th Street and 2nd Avenue) awaits Second through Fifth graders this winter. A heated pool and heated swim deck make this an appealing place to improve swim strokes while learning water safety. The Goldfish 4:1 teaching ratio ensures each swimmer receives close attention.

Caedmon Chess Team (Thursdays)

Following the Chess Advance method, experienced players from Second through Fifth grade will take their games to the next competitive level in this class. Students will learn more advanced strategies and game analysis while squaring off against one another and may represent Caedmon at local chess tournaments this winter.

Thursdays, 4:40 – 5:40, September 21st through December 7th, 12 sessions

 

Creative Art (Fridays)

Early Program and Kindergarten children take over this studio-based class with concentrations on techniques, surfaces, and mediums. Children’s own imaginations lead to open-ended explorations where self-expression can thrive in a guided setting.

Super Sketching (Fridays)

This challenging class for First through Fifth graders requires students to choose the subjects of their sketches, including art, still life, photographs, and nature. Their aptitude for drawing accurately naturally improves through repetition and finding peace in the process.

Ballet Dancing (Fridays)

Early Program and Kindergarten children discover the flowing grace and beauty of this introductory ballet class. Children will learn plies and eleves while rhythmically dancing to the creative sounds and stories accompanying each movement.

Ping Pong (Fridays)

The fun game of table tennis continues this spring. It’s not just a good time among friends, but this class for First through Fifth graders builds eye-hand coordination, spatial awareness, reflexes, concentration, and sportsmanship.

Birchguard Quest (Fridays)

Kindergarten, First and Second Grade students are the heroes in their own game as they work through problems, encounter adversaries, and solve riddles and puzzles while traveling through the fantasy world of Arborheim. In addition to the fun, they’ll learn teamwork, logic and reasoning, critical thinking, communication skills, and more.

The Mystery of Magic (Fridays)

Second, Third, Fourth, and Fifth Grade students build toward a magic show as they learn a variety of mystifying tricks using common household items like coins and playing cards. Children will also improve self-esteem, focus, and fine-motor skills as they confound onlookers who wonder, “How did you do that?”
